How to use it

  1. Add the files

    Any audio format the browser can decode, and video files too if you only want the sound.

  2. Wait for the one time download

    The converter itself downloads on the first run and is kept for later, so this pause happens once and never again.

  3. Choose the bitrate

    MP3 is already selected. 192 kbps is transparent for music, 128 kbps is plenty for voice, and anything above 256 kbps rarely earns the extra megabytes.

  4. Download the MP3

    One file downloads directly, a batch arrives as a ZIP. Converting a lossy source to MP3 loses a little more, so keep the original if you may need it again.

MP3 wins on compatibility and nothing else

Every technical comparison of audio formats puts MP3 last. AAC sounds better at the same size. Opus sounds better still, especially on speech. FLAC keeps everything. MP3 is a 1993 codec that all of them beat.

It also plays on every device that has ever produced sound. That single fact outweighs the rest more often than audio enthusiasts like to admit. If a file has to work on a car stereo from 2009, a gym treadmill, a relative’s old phone or a piece of industrial equipment that plays announcements, it has to be an MP3.

The patents expired in 2017, so there is nothing left to license and no reason for any device to stop supporting it.

The returns flatten fast. The jump from 96 to 192 is obvious on music; the jump from 192 to 320 is one most people cannot pick out in a blind test, on most equipment.

For speech there is no argument at all: 128 kbps is enough. A voice occupies a narrow band and compresses easily, which is why podcasts ship at that rate and sound perfect.

Converting from a lossy format loses a little more

If your source is already M4A, AAC, OGG or WMA, converting to MP3 is a second lossy pass on top of a first. Each codec discards different things, so the result is slightly worse than a direct encode from the master would have been.

At 192 kbps and above this is inaudible in practice, and compatibility usually matters more. But it means two things worth remembering:

  • Convert from the best copy you have, never from a copy of a copy.
  • Do not convert back and forth. Each round trip costs another generation.

Converting from WAV or FLAC has no such problem, because neither has discarded anything yet.

Video files work too

Drop in an MP4, MOV, MKV or WebM and the soundtrack is extracted and encoded to MP3. The picture is discarded, which is why it is fast even on a long recording. There is a dedicated page for that at video to MP3 with more on how it works.

Nothing is uploaded

The conversion runs inside your browser tab with FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly. The file is read from your disk and the MP3 written back to it. Nothing is transmitted, queued, stored or scanned.

Common questions

What can it convert to MP3?

Any audio format you are likely to have, including M4A, AAC, WAV, FLAC, OGG, Opus, WMA, AIFF and AMR, plus the soundtrack of any video file, which is extracted automatically. If your device can play it, this can almost certainly convert it.

Why is MP3 still worth using in 2026?

Because it is the only audio format that plays on absolutely everything. Newer codecs beat it on sound per byte, and none of them come close on compatibility. Car stereos, hearing aids, gym equipment, old phones, cheap MP3 players and every piece of software ever written all take MP3 without asking questions.

What bitrate should I choose?

192 kbps is transparent to most listeners on most music and is the right default. Use 320 for anything you are keeping or listening to on good headphones, and 128 for speech, podcasts and lectures, where it sounds identical and halves the file.

Are the track name and artist kept?

Basic tags are carried across where the source file has them, written as ID3v2 so titles longer than 30 characters and non-English characters survive. Album art and less common fields may not make the trip.

Is MP3 still patented?

No. The last MP3 patents expired in 2017, and the format has been fully free to use, encode and distribute ever since. That is part of why it remains everywhere.
