How to use it

  1. Add the WAV files

    Drop them in. WAV files are large, and none of that size has to travel anywhere because the conversion is local.

  2. Wait for the engine once

    The converter downloads on the first run and stays cached for the rest of your session and beyond.

  3. Choose the bitrate

    This is the one setting that decides the trade. 192 kbps is transparent for most music, 320 kbps is the ceiling MP3 offers.

  4. Download the MP3

    Expect roughly a tenth of the original size. Keep the WAV if the file is a master you will edit again.

WAV files are enormous, and that is the point

A WAV stores raw PCM samples with no compression whatsoever. CD quality, meaning 16-bit at 44.1 kHz in stereo, works out at almost exactly 10 MB per minute.

That size is a feature while you are working. Every edit, cut and effect applies to exact samples with no compression artefacts accumulating underneath. It becomes a liability the moment the file has to be emailed, uploaded or carried on a phone.

This is the good kind of conversion

Every other lossy conversion on this site is a second pass over audio that has already been compressed once. WAV to MP3 is not: the WAV holds the original samples, nothing has been discarded yet, and the MP3 encoder gets a clean source to work from.

That matters more than the bitrate you pick. An MP3 made from a WAV at 192 kbps sounds better than an MP3 made from another MP3 at 320.

Picking a bitrate

320 kbps for music you are publishing or keeping. It is transparent for essentially every listener and every playback system, and the file is still a fifth the size of the WAV.

192 kbps for general listening. Transparent for most people on most equipment, and a useful step smaller.

128 kbps for anything that is a human voice. Speech occupies a narrow band and compresses beautifully, so interviews, lectures, dictation and podcasts sound identical here and take half the space of 256.

96 kbps when a voice recording has to fit an email attachment limit.

Keep the WAV

MP3 discards detail permanently. Converting the MP3 back to WAV later gives you a large file containing exactly what the MP3 contained. It restores the format, not the audio.

If the recording is a master, a session export or anything you might edit again, archive the WAV. FLAC is worth considering for that: it is lossless, so it can be restored to an identical WAV, at about half the size.

Nothing is uploaded

WAV files are usually originals: a session, an interview, a recorded consultation, a master. They are also the largest files most people ever try to convert, which is exactly what upload-based converters put behind a paid tier. There is no upload here. The file is read from your disk, compressed by your own processor, and the MP3 written straight back.

Common questions

How much smaller will the MP3 be?

About a tenth the size at 192 kbps, and a fifth at 320 kbps. A WAV holds raw samples at roughly 10 MB per minute of CD-quality stereo, so a one-hour recording is around 600 MB. At 192 kbps that becomes 86 MB, and at 128 kbps for speech, 57 MB.

Is this the first time the audio is compressed?

Yes, if the WAV is an original recording. WAV stores samples exactly as captured, so nothing has been discarded yet and this conversion is a single clean lossy pass. That is the best case, and it is why WAV to MP3 sounds better than converting from another lossy format at the same bitrate.

What bitrate should I pick?

320 kbps for music you are keeping or publishing. 192 kbps for general listening. 128 kbps for anything that is a voice, such as interviews, lectures, dictation and podcasts, where it is indistinguishable and less than half the size.

Can I get the WAV back afterwards?

You can convert the MP3 back to WAV, but it will not be the file you started with. MP3 permanently discards detail, and decoding it to WAV simply produces a large file containing the compressed result. Keep the original WAV if you may need it.

Will it handle a 2 GB session file?

Files up to around 2 GB work on a desktop browser, which covers about three hours of stereo. Beyond that the engine runs out of address space, because it is a 32-bit build. Split long sessions first if you hit that.
