The centimetre is standard almost everywhere for body measurements, clothing, paper sizes, and everyday distances too small for a metre. The inch persists in the United States, and survives worldwide in specific technical niches regardless of the local system:

Mental arithmetic
Centimetres to inches: divide by 2.5, then subtract about 1.5%. Close enough for shopping and DIY.
Inches to centimetres: multiply by 2.5, then add about 1.5%. So 10 inches → 25 + 0.4 = 25.4 cm, which is exact.
A useful anchor: 30 cm is almost exactly one foot (11.81 inches). A 30 cm ruler and a 12-inch ruler are close enough to be interchangeable for most non-precision work.

One inch is exactly 2.54 centimetres. This is not an approximation. It has been the defined value since the International Yard and Pound Agreement of 1959, which fixed the inch in metric terms. So 1 cm = 1 ÷ 2.54 = 0.3937007874… inches, a repeating decimal.
How do I convert in my head?
Divide by 2.5 and subtract about 1.5%. For 30 cm, 30 ÷ 2.5 = 12, minus 1.5% gives 11.82, and the true answer is 11.81. Or remember that 2.5 cm is almost exactly an inch, so centimetres divided by 2.5 is close enough for most practical purposes.
What height is 170 cm in feet and inches?

Why does the US still use inches?
