What extracting audio actually does
A video file holds at least two separate streams: a picture and a soundtrack. They are stored side by side, not mixed together. Extracting the audio means discarding the picture stream and keeping the other one, which is why it is fast even on a long recording and why the sound comes out exactly as it went in when the format allows a straight copy.
An MP4 from a phone almost always carries AAC audio. Asked for M4A, these tools copy that stream across untouched. Asked for MP3, they have to re-encode it, because MP3 and AAC are different codecs. Choose M4A when you want the exact original sound, and MP3 when you need something that plays on absolutely anything.
What people use this for
- Lectures and webinars. A two-hour recording becomes a 60 MB audio file you can listen to on a commute without burning through mobile data.
- Interviews and meetings. Most transcription software takes audio only, and will reject an MP4 outright.
- Music from a live recording. Keeping the performance without the shaky footage.

Why doing this in the browser matters here
Of everything on this site, these are the tools where uploading would be least defensible. The files people extract audio from are recorded conversations: a consultation, a deposition, a lecture someone paid for, a meeting under NDA. Handing that to an unknown server to save two minutes is a poor trade.
These tools run FFmpeg inside your browser tab. The video is read from your disk, the soundtrack is written back to your downloads folder. Nothing is transmitted for the whole operation, because there is no server in the picture.
If the tool says there is no audio track
Some videos genuinely have none. Screen recordings made without selecting a microphone, clips exported as video-only from an editor, and silent GIF-style captures all contain a picture and nothing else. No converter can recover sound that was never recorded. Play the file with the volume up first. If it is silent there, it will be silent here.
