How to use it

  1. Add the video

    Any format your browser can read, including MP4, MOV, MKV and WebM. Several at once is fine.

  2. Wait for the engine once

    The first run downloads the converter and keeps it, so later extractions begin without the wait.

  3. Set the bitrate

    128 kbps suits speech, 192 kbps suits music. The video track is discarded either way.

  4. Download the MP3

    One file downloads on its own, a batch comes back as a ZIP, and the video never leaves your device.

One page for every container

MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, WebM and the rest are all wrappers. Inside each is an audio stream, encoded with AAC, MP3, Opus, Vorbis, AC-3 or something older.

Extraction ignores the wrapper. The audio stream is located, decoded from whatever it happens to be, and re-encoded as MP3. That is why one page covers every video format rather than needing a separate tool for each. The container genuinely does not matter.

Why it is fast, and gets so much smaller

A video file is overwhelmingly picture. Discarding it is where both the speed and the size reduction come from.

Because no video frames are decoded, resolution has no effect on how long it takes. A 4K file and a 360p file of the same length finish in the same time.

Bitrate: 128 kbps is usually right

Most videos people extract audio from are somebody talking. Speech occupies a narrow band and compresses extremely well, so 128 kbps is indistinguishable from 320 on a voice and produces a file 40% of the size.

Move up to 192 for podcasts with music beds, and 320 only for a live music recording you want to keep.

When there is no audio to extract

Some videos have no soundtrack at all. Screen recordings made without selecting a microphone, silent exports from an editor, and GIF-style captures contain a picture and nothing else, and the tool will say so rather than producing an empty file.

Play the video with the volume up first. If it is silent there, nothing can be extracted from it, because no converter can recover sound that was never recorded.

Nothing is uploaded

These are recorded conversations more often than not, and frequently ones covered by confidentiality: consultations, depositions, internal meetings, paid courses. The conversion runs inside your browser tab using FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly, so the video is read from your own disk and the MP3 written back to it. There is no server, no queue, and no copy of your recording anywhere but your device.

Common questions

Which video formats work?

All of them, in practice. MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, WebM, FLV, WMV, 3GP, MPEG, TS and anything else you are likely to have. The tool reads the file, finds the audio stream inside whatever container it is in, and encodes that to MP3.

How long does it take?

Seconds to a minute for most files. The picture is discarded rather than processed, so the resolution is irrelevant and only the length of the soundtrack matters. A one-hour 4K video takes the same time as a one-hour 360p one.

Can I convert several videos at once?

Yes. Drop in as many as you like and they are processed one after another, then offered as a single ZIP. The engine loads once for the whole batch.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes, on any browser from 2023 onwards. The engine is a 9.8 MB download the first time, so it is worth doing on Wi-Fi. Very large videos may exhaust the memory available to a phone browser before a desktop would hit the same wall.

Can I extract audio from a YouTube link?

No. This converts files that are already on your device. There is no URL box, no downloader, and no way to point it at a streaming service.
