A hectare is 2.471 acres, and a square mile is exactly 640 acres, a relationship that comes from the US Public Land Survey System, where a section is one square mile divided into quarter-sections of 160 acres.
A caution about listed areas
The arithmetic here is exact. What is not exact is what a listed area includes. Depending on the market and the surveyor’s standard, a quoted figure may or may not include balconies, terraces, garages, stairwells, wall thickness, or a share of the building’s common parts.
Two apartments both listed at 100 m² can differ by ten per cent or more in usable floor space. Convert the number by all means, but ask what the number measures before comparing across markets.

What is the exact factor?
One square foot is exactly 0.09290304 square metres. This is the length factor squared: a foot is exactly 0.3048 m, and 0.3048 squared is 0.09290304. One square metre is 10.7639104 square feet.
Why can I not just use the length factor?
Because area has two dimensions. A room twice as long and twice as wide is four times the area, not twice. Dividing square feet by 3.28 instead of 10.76 is the single most common error in property listings, and it overstates the metric area by more than three times.
How do I estimate it in my head?
Divide square feet by ten and subtract about seven per cent. A 1,500 sq ft apartment: 150 minus 10 gives roughly 140 m². The true answer is 139.4. Going the other way, multiply square metres by ten and add eight per cent.
Are property areas measured the same way everywhere?
No, and this matters more than the conversion. Some markets quote gross internal area, some include balconies, some include a share of common space, and some measure to the outside of external walls. A 100 m² apartment in two countries can enclose noticeably different amounts of usable room. Always ask what the figure includes.
