Static and dynamic codes, and why one stops working
Every QR code is one of two kinds, and most “stopped working” stories come from not knowing which one you made.
A static code stores your content in the pattern itself. Scan it and the phone reads the link, the Wi-Fi password or the text directly. Nothing stands between the code and the destination, so there is nothing that can expire.
A dynamic code stores a short link to the provider’s server. Scan it and the phone goes to that server, which then forwards the visitor to your real destination. That extra hop is what makes editing and scan counts possible, and it is also what makes the code depend on the provider. When the account lapses, the server stops forwarding.

Where static codes are the better choice
For anything printed, especially anything printed in quantity, the static code is usually what people actually wanted: restaurant menus and table cards, business cards, product packaging, posters, shop windows, invitations, and the Wi-Fi code on the wall of a café or an office meeting room. Reprinting a thousand menus because a trial ended is an expensive way to learn the difference.
The one habit that keeps a static code working is keeping its destination alive. If the code points at your website, keep that address working. If the address might change, point the code at a page you control and change what that page shows instead.
Making a good code here
- Keep the content short. A shorter link makes a coarser pattern, which scans faster and from further away.
- Choose error correction by use. Medium suits most codes. Choose high for anything that will be handled, weathered, or have a logo placed on it.
- Keep the quiet zone. The white border around the code is part of it. Cropping it off is the most common reason a printed code will not scan.
- Print SVG for anything large. It stays sharp at any size, where a small PNG blown up for a banner goes soft.
- Test before printing. Scan it with two different phones, including an older one, at the size it will be printed.
When a dynamic service is right
If the destination has to change after printing, such as a weekly menu PDF or a campaign landing page, or if you need to report how many people scanned, a dynamic code is the right tool, and paying for it is reasonable. Just treat it as a subscription for as long as the code is out in the world, not as a one-off download.

Is this QR Code Generator PRO?
No, and it has no connection to it. QR Code Generator PRO is a product of its owner at qr-code-generator.com. This is a separate, free generator that makes static codes in your browser.
Why did my QR code stop working?
If it was made during a trial of a dynamic QR service, the trial probably ended. QR Code Generator's own help centre says dynamic codes created during its 14-day free trial are deactivated when the trial ends, and that a scan then leads to a service page instead of your link until the account is upgraded. Static codes made there keep working.
Will the codes from this page ever expire?
No. They are static codes: your link, Wi-Fi password or text is encoded directly in the black and white modules. There is no redirect server behind them that could shut down, start charging or stop forwarding. A code printed today will scan in twenty years if the link it holds still exists.
What do dynamic codes give you that these do not?
Two real things. You can change where a dynamic code points after it is printed, and you can see how many times it was scanned. Both work because every scan passes through the provider's server first. If you need either, a paid dynamic service is the right tool, as long as you keep paying for as long as the code is in use.
Is anything I type stored or tracked?
No. The code is drawn in your browser from what you type, and nothing is sent anywhere. Because scans go straight to your link, nobody in between, including us, sees who scans your code.
