How to use it
Say how much you need
How much sets the count, Of what picks paragraphs, sentences, words or list items.
Choose a vocabulary
Classic Latin, or Bahasa Indonesia when the placeholder should look like the language the page will actually ship in.
Set the formatting
Start with Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet keeps the traditional opening. Wrap in HTML tags returns markup you can paste straight into a template.
Copy the text
The counters show words, characters and paragraphs, so you can match the length of the real copy you are standing in for.
What it generates
- Paragraphs of three to six sentences, optionally opening with the traditional line
- Sentences of varying length with plausible comma placement
- Words, for filling a fixed-length field
- List items, for testing bulleted layouts
Output can be wrapped in HTML tags, so it drops straight into a template.
The two vocabularies
Latin is the traditional filler, derived from Cicero. Use it when the design will hold English or another Latin-script European language.
Bahasa Indonesia uses a plausible Indonesian vocabulary. This matters more than it might seem: Indonesian has longer average word length, heavy use of prefixes and suffixes like meng-, ber- and -kan, and a different vowel distribution.
| Metric | Latin filler | Indonesian |
|---|---|---|
| Average word length | ~6.2 characters | ~7.4 characters |
| Long words (10+ chars) | Uncommon | Frequent |
| Vowel-heavy | Moderate | High |
A navigation item, a button label or a table column that fits comfortably with Latin filler can overflow with real Indonesian copy. Testing with the right filler catches that at design time rather than at launch.
Why the text is deliberately meaningless
The scrambling is the point. Readable placeholder text pulls the eye into reading, which is exactly what you do not want when assessing whether a layout balances. Meaningless text with the right visual texture lets you evaluate rhythm, line length, and how a block of type sits on the page.
That is also the argument for the Indonesian option: the texture is what matters, and Latin texture is wrong for Indonesian pages.
When to use real copy instead
Placeholder text hides a specific class of problem:
- Real headlines are longer than filler sentences and wrap differently
- Real product names contain numbers, hyphens and brand capitalisation
- Real paragraphs vary far more in length than generated ones
- Real content has links, emphasis and inline elements
For final sign-off, use real or realistic copy. Reserve filler for the earlier stage where you are still deciding on type scale and spacing.
Before you ship
Search your codebase and your CMS for lorem, ipsum and dolor before launch. Placeholder text reaching production is common enough to be a running joke, and on a live page it reads as abandoned, as well as being a thin-content signal to search engines.
Common questions
Where does lorem ipsum come from?
From a corrupted passage of Cicero's De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum, written in 45 BC. A printer in the 1500s scrambled it to make a type specimen, and the scrambling is deliberate: text that cannot be read is text that does not distract from the layout.
Why offer an Indonesian vocabulary?
Because Latin sets Latin word lengths and letter frequencies. Indonesian words average longer, with different vowel distribution and frequent affixation, so a layout that looks balanced with Latin filler can break when real Indonesian copy arrives. Testing with plausible filler catches that before the content does.
Should I use placeholder text at all?
Sparingly. Real or realistic copy surfaces layout problems that filler hides: actual headlines are longer, actual product names wrap awkwardly, actual sentences vary. Lorem ipsum is best for testing typography and rhythm, not for signing off a design.
Does placeholder text cause SEO problems?
Only if it ships. Lorem ipsum on a live page is a thin-content signal and looks unfinished to anyone who lands on it. Search for it across your site before launch, since it escapes into production more often than anyone admits.
