How to scan a document to PDF with your phone, no app needed
Photograph the document flat and in good light, crop the edges, then drop the photos into the tool below and make a PDF. No scanner app, no account, and the photos never leave your phone.

Taking photos that make a good PDF
A good PDF starts with the photo. A sharp, evenly lit photo gives a PDF that is both readable and small; a dim, tilted one is neither.
- Flat and contrasting. Lay the document on a flat surface in a different shade from the paper, so its edges are easy to see.
- Light from the side. Daylight from a window is best. A ceiling light directly overhead casts the phone’s shadow onto the page, and glossy cards reflect it.
- Straight from above. Hold the phone parallel to the page, or the text shrinks towards one side.
- Fill the frame. Move close enough that the document fills most of the screen, and tap the text to focus.
- Crop in the gallery. Trim away the table around the page before making the PDF.
Making the PDF
- Drop the photos into the tool above. iPhone HEIC photos go straight in.
- Put them in page order with the arrows, and turn any sideways photo with the turn button.
- Choose a Page size, and leave Orientation on Auto so each page follows its photo.
- Choose an Image quality. Balanced suits most things; Smallest file is for upload forms.
- Leave Output on One PDF, press Make PDF, check the size shown, and download.
If a form wants each page or each document as its own file, choose One PDF per image instead, and every photo comes back as a separate PDF in one ZIP.
If the PDF must be under a limit
Every photo is capped in pixels before it goes into the PDF, which already keeps the file small. For a hard limit, compress the finished PDF with the PDF compressor using To a size, which finds the sharpest version under the number you type.
Combining with other documents
To join the scan with PDFs you already have, such as a CV exported from Word, merge them with PDF merge. Compress after merging, and check the total size.
Why not upload it somewhere
The documents people scan on their phones are usually personal: IDs, payslips, certificates, tenancy agreements, medical letters. Many online converters upload them first. This page builds the PDF inside your browser, so the photos never leave your phone.
Common questions
Do I need a scanner app?
No. Your phone's camera and gallery do the scanning; this page turns the photos into a PDF. Scanner apps add automatic cropping and filters, but many also save to a cloud account, which is worth knowing before you scan an ID or a bank statement.
Which paper size should I choose?
A4 for most documents outside North America, Letter for the United States and Canada, and F4 for the longer sheets common in Indonesian offices. For a card, such as an ID, choose Same shape as the image, so the page is card shaped rather than a card blown up to fill a sheet.
How do I keep the PDF small?
Choose Smallest file under Image quality. In our test, two photographed A4 pages became a 108 KB PDF that way, against 1.61 MB on High. If a form sets a hard limit, compress the finished PDF to that exact size with the PDF compressor.
